What oil for my compressor?

I have 2 Campbell hausfeld air compressors in my shop. One is a 60 gal single pump 3 hp and the other is a twin cylinder 2 stage 5 hp 80 gal. There are a ton of decals all over them but none tell you exactly what oil to run in the crankcase. Is there a specific oil to run?

I believe you should look for a non-detergent oil.
I believe last time I changed the oil in my old Speedaire options were limited at the local parts store for non-detergent oils, think I ended up with straight 30wt.

This is the oil that came with my 80 gallon IR compressor:

Compressors are best off with compressor oil. Who would have thought?

And, we all know that synthetic oils are better than petroleum oil, so it isn't too difficult to figure out what is best.

Air compressors recommend petrolium based, non-detergent oil. Usually a standard grade oil, not multi-viscosity.

Yep 30-ND (non-detergent)is what mine calls for. Never saw the need for synthetic, but I change it out once a year.

Years ago I was the contact to the compressor service company at the place I worked at. They came in and did a service on 2 big Kassar screw type compressors and used synthetic Royal Purple non- detergent and it stunk up the place really bad- had to send people home from headaches- had the compressor people come back out and change the oil again the next day so that we could work in the labs and cutting areas where we used a lot of air tool machines. Go w/ the 30 wt. non- detergent.

Both my compressors recommend synthetic compressor oil. That is all I've used in them for the last 20 years. Good synthetics are rated for 8,000+ hours of runtime, so they save you a lot of money over annual oil changes with non-synthetic oils.
Many consumer compressors have pumps that have hour ratings about the same as a good synthetic oil, so the average home user can run on one oil change for the life of the compressor with synthetic.
