We used the extra fine steel wool to polish the glass exposure tubes in our blue print machines here at work....no scratches or the blue prints would have unwanted lines on them.

Get a high speed buffer with a wool compounding pad and use a heavy duty rubbing coupound, (I use 3M) to cut fresh paint. It will break down and polish the glass as you go and blend in other spots as well.

Been doing this over 30 years and it also helps on front windshields to clear up scratches from bad wiper blades.

If you use steel wool just make sure that you blow the car off very well with a blow gun before getting it wet. You don't want little rust specks.
