There's a nut in the bottom of them to run a threaded rod into with a wing nut in the trunk. I still have the rods and wing nuts somewhere.
They were thief magnets.

Mine survived 5 different break-ins but a couple of thieves went so far as to removed the rear window to get them!!!! They took the window trim too!!!
The M2 tune-up speakers in the front were the cats azz too!
(They were also stolen. I still have the M4s which replaced them in Pioneer's lineup.)
You don't even want to know how much the turned aluminum knobs for a KEH-3500 digital cassette deck cost..... I had to buy THREE sets of the damn things!!!!!
