Summit Cam question

I have a stock '74 350 that's nothing special. Stock 882 heads, 8.5:1, dual plane, Holley 650. Hooker Headers, 4 spd, 4.11 rear.

I want to change the cam since I've got the damper and timing cover off to swap in a new timing set and re-gasket some of the bottom end. I don't really want to throw too much money at it now since I plan on swapping a set of vortecs (or just building up the big block) in a few months. Since I'm placing a Summit order in a few days I though I'd add a mild cam to the list. Summit's stuff is on sale. I have used some of their stuff in the past that has been decent, but never for any internal engine parts.

What do you think? If it sounds like a good idea, how much lift would I be safe with on the stock valve springs? Around .450 or so?

With your combo you could get by with a Crane Energizer 100052 cam-216-216-.454-.454 lift 110 lsa. Even though crane is out of business there are a lot of these cams still in parts house inventories for around $130 including lifters. Woud give you plenty of low and mid range. Anything around .450 lift will work fine with your springs as most stock rocker arms only spec out at around 1.4 or so. If you want the Summit cam then the K1102 or K1103 would work for you although I think the Crane would give you a little better performance but I have not used either of the Summit cams. Since you have a free flowing exhaust system I would go with a single pattern cam on a 108 or 110 LSA. I believe the Summit cams are on a 112 LSA. More expensive cams that would work would be the Isky 264 Mega cam 214-214-.450-.450 108 LSA and the Comp 268 HE 218-218-.454-110 LSA . With your 4 speed and 4.10 gears you can get by with more duration than if you had and automatic and less gears. If you want a rump rump idle with a short duration cam try the Elgin E1785 218-218-.450 lift on a 106 LSA. This is a cam with the same specs as the old Crane 274H06 camshaft. $99 from competitionproducts.com including lifters.

As far as running a summit cam, I would'nt be scared of it. Although never running one myself, I have seen my share of summit cammed motors around here and have not herd anything bad about them. With the way the economy has been, I have been running alot of house brand parts, although Jegs brand, and have had nothing but good luck with it.

I have ran .480 lift on stock springs in the past, and not had any problems. Im sure thats more than a lot of people consider safe, but it worked for me.

ive got a summit cam in my 355 and love it. this is the one i bought

Its been in the motor for around 2.5 months and no problems as of yet. good amount of power and torque. Im sure the high dollar lunati and comp cams would be better but this is what i choose and im happy with it

The Summit K1102 is the same as the Edelbrock Performer cam and would work well in a low compression motor. It's got probably about 10* more duration than the stock cam in your 74.

One step up is the K1103 which is 10* bigger than the 1102 and is about as far as you can go with stock heads (.465 on the exhaust with stock 1.5 rockers). It's really a bit too much in a factory smogger motor without a bit higher stall converter and decent rear rears.

Those are on sale because (if I'm not mistaken) they're the Blue Racer cams - made by Crane Cams - made for Summit as an in house brand.

AAMOF, that series of cams is sold under many other names by many other distributors as in house cams, and possibly by other companies (such as Edelbrock) as their own.

i used a Summit cam in my 396 and have one in my 350 now, K1105. gonna break it in next weekend.

I used stock springs on a XE 268 cam and had no problems at all. I'm very surprised I didn't run into trouble.

With that 4;11 gear I like that Elgin cam Doc mentioned. Otherwise with a low compression motor I'd go with a wider lobe centers, 110 degrees or so.

The old generic Summit Performer cam at 204/214 will do you nicely at 8.5 to 1 in a 350 spec'd at; 204/214, 112/108, .420/.442" lift.

And I figure PROBABLY the best imho for an 8.5 to 1 CR'd engine will be a CC 246PE hy-cam spec'd at; 246/203/263/212, 110/106, .429"/.438" lift.

And Isky'd old 256/262 Supercam spec'd at;

256/202/262/208, 110/??, .425"/.435" lift.

Take your pick w/ the cheap Summit falling right in here by me..

I dont like like them and you can get a "Doug Herbert" cam for the same price with a much better grind, still not "The best of the best" but if we are looking at summit cams herbert has really good ones that blow most budget cams away.

Hey guys,

Any problem with using a little less cam and leaving the high lift valve spring in place? I am replacing a 530 lift cam with a Crane Energizer 100052 cam-216-216-.454-.454 lift.(and lifters) Do I need to change springs? They have less than 1000 miles. I just needed a more street friendly cam for every day.
