First off its not the entire VIN,and second, you can get the entire VIN by walking up to any car at a car show,or just making one up. If a state doesnt check records outside their state, then you have a 50:1 chance(very good odds) that just making a Camaro VIN up will get you papers. I could make up a number,1=chevy,Q= base model, 87 = 2 door coupe, F= 307 engine 3= 1973,N= Norwood and then add any 6 numbers I want and have a legit vin number. So if I owned a 70 thru 73 Camaro I could ujust walk into the DMV and tell them that my car has a VIN 1Q87f3N123456 and they will just make up a title. It could be somebody's car from any state,or a car that never even existed(123456 could have been used on a type LT which would start with 1S87K3N. Either way, what is posted here is less info then is what is on the Z/28 registry.

You would also need a source for repop VIN tags. If thats the case, then we are all in trouble since anybody could repop a 72 and later tag to say they had a Z/28 engine and have a Z/28. Anybody could make a tag for a 70-71 with their last 6 digits with a V* prefix in front of them to make their 6 banger into a V-8.

1981 Z28
VIN 131592 (Norwood)
Date 05A
Body 206626

Interesting it has the same date code as on of John's cars with a body number earlier and a VIN later. They probably were on the assembly line at the same time.

Is the date code on the build sheet?
(I believe the body # is on it.)

I ask because I still have a build sheet from my 78 but I don't have the trim tag info.

Thanks,so far so good. I just drew up a few sheets of paper with 12 month boxes for each year, and have been filling them in. Once I get it looking full I will try and post it. Thanks, this should be cool. Once done,we can always referance it to conact other owners of cars with close build dates to ours when looking to figure out mid year changes on cars.

Twisted, any info is fine. The last 6 of the VIN and build date are probably the most usefull. Like I said,it will help in the future when trying to make heads or tails of the oddities our cars have as things changed during the year.

Awsome. The 70-81 has a strong showing on the list and the 74's are doing surprisingly well. This could also be usefull in comparing Norwood and LA cars in the late 70's years. I am thinking of adding some space to the final list to put in the user name of the owner so that if in the future somebody wants to contact them about something on their car they have a name to PM.

Nasty Z has been the go to place for 2nd gen info, but nobody has a CRG type database for our cars. Maybe as we develop stuff like this we can start documenting all those oddities about our cars so in the future we car restore them correctly.

date code on build sheet

I'm not sure about date codes on the build sheet, but my car was built first week of may according to my trim tag (05A)
On the top of my build sheet it says 05-07. Maybe that is the actual date?
I have another photo of a donor car build sheet that had 06-17 on the top left, but I don't have trim tag info to compare that to. The donor car I had the trim tag date had an unreadable build sheet.
My brother's car has a build sheet that says 02-27 in the top left square. I don't have trim tag info for this car available right now.
Those numbers sure do look like dates to me. It would be a huge coincidence for that number on my build sheet to match the date on my trim tag if it wasn't the date.

Maybe a few others can check their build sheets.

Thanks, keep them coming. I will be updating the list in work on Monday. I may go over to the Z/28 registry and get some numbers from there just to fill in the 70 thru 73 section for the time being.
