1978 orignal or z28 clone
I have a mostly original 78 camaro rs with a 383
Needs some body work, but its all there...
With the right parts from a nearby junkyard it could turned into a z...
Is this something i want to to do or am i going to end up butchering my car??
Just something ive been kicking around in my head

If you just want the Z28 look, you need the hood, fender vents, and decals. Then you would need to paint the car before you install the decals.

Post some pics of your car. I don't see why you'd want to change it if its a true RS with the two-color paint scheme.
I'm guessing you can find plenty of other things on the car to spend your money on.

'78 RS would have been gloss black upper and another solid color lower.
The original paint codes can be found on the cowl tag and build sheet.

As we speak im in the process of taking panels off to sand and remove rust, mostly around the rear glass...
It looks like most of these panels came off another camaro.... Ive found several odd colors under the primer...
So i havent the slightest idea the original color, other than the missing cowl tag....

I'm curious how you figured out what model it is. An RS would have originally been painted like this:

This is going by what the previous owner said.....
He seemed like he new what he was talking about.
Although the car had been sitting in his field near my house for as long as i can remember... (Im 23) so at least 15 years ...

If he said he knew it was an RS then there's a fair chance he removed the cowl tag and still has it. Wouldn't hurt to ask him for it next time you see him.
If the interior hasn't been messed with too much you might be able to locate a copy of the car's build sheet on the floor. Helps to have solid info on your Camaro to base upcoming decisions on...

Its not an RS. But there's no hard & fast rule that prevents you from painting it like one.
If the Z28 you spied in the boneyard has a straight hood and complete rear spoiler you should snag those pieces. For that matter, if the body shell is in good shape and the price is right you could load the whole works onto your trailer and bring it home. Building your project up from the boneyard shell would give you a real Z.
