Sorry to resurect an old post, but I was searching for what the grease crayon numbers on the firewall represented.
I'm inclined to go along with the paint theory.
My car left the Norwood plant with 6-78+1 on the firewall in April of 1971 and it's a rosewood car, so that would make sense.
Still not sure what the 6 and the 1 represent.
Mike

6-78+1 ..... I will ask a couple of people from paint and confirm. The tub was depapered prior to entering paint and it was routine to mark the paint code.
As to the meaning of the 6 and the 1 - I will see what I can find out for you.

For the Norwood cars that i own there is a B over the top hinge on the drivers side , appears to be a paint type stamp. Have a pic of the light green stamp marking but it says my image is to big to load.

My Norwood has an unpainted original firewall. Just over the heater box, in some sort of white crayon, is a Z27 in 4" letters.
It's an SS396 Z27 LS3

i just don't understand who on the line this information would be important to . as the motor and trans and sub frame and exhaust and rear was loaded in its carrier in a different part of the plant . when the 2 met it was to late to change much unless you stop the line . the build sheet was always present also , but who knows . the paint maybe . but again who wanted a brand new car with some scribbling on its firewall
