I've wondered this myself. My guess would be 1977 or maybe 1978. My 1976's 350 was originally Chevy orange. I wonder also if it varied by engine or plant.

Think '77 was the year Chevy went from Chevy Orange to Corporate Blue on their engines. Friend of mine had a '76 with a 350 and it was Chevy Orange from the factory. Hope this helps!

I can do you one better! 1977 was definitely the first year for blue engine paint, an 1983 was when they switched to black. Mike

Reprinted from Jeff Betz ........................

"1977 all GM cars had blue engines, because they were beginning the "corporate engine" edict. Not 1978. The 55 Chevy was orange, the 56 chevy was RED (only year for a red Chevy V8...remember I grew up with 55-57 chevys), the left over 265's that were used early in 57 were yellow (trivia), then all V8's from 57-1976 were orange. 77-81/82(or so) were blue, and 82/83? until the early 90's were painted black. All engine castings now come into the plants powdercoated black before machining. Take a look at any new vehicle, the machined surfaces are not painted! The entire casting is powdercoated right after being cast. Engine plants have not sprayed any paint since the early 90's.

The weird thing when I went to find the correct paint for my Camaro was I couldn't find it. The GM "corporate blue" is not correct. Eastwoods blue is not correct! I ended up using #221 Blue from Plasticote that is perfect (And is called corporate blue). I had some original paint left over on the really greasy valve covers that I was able to use to match it up. Again, further research showed that everyone may have had blue specified as the color from 77 till 81, but all of the blues were different. Chevy, Pontiac, Olds, Cadillac, and Buick were all different blues!!!! Guaranteeed!!! "

Ummm...
Early 70's (not sure of the exact years, but I think 70 or 71 thru 76) they used Chevrolet RED.
My 74 engine was originally red.

My 78 had a blue 305 V8.
My 80 had a blue 229 V6.
Both had the original engines when I bought them.

I recently painted my engine, before installing the new one, there are 2 types of blue in the part store available to paint motors with, one was chevy blue(corporate blue) and the other was chevy blue. the chevy one is slightly lighter, when i get home i may still have the number/name of the paint. If i have it i will tell you the info

This is the correct info from a man who knows, was an engineer at G.M. and owned THE BEST restored 77-Z28 ever....................
