2500 Or 3000 Stall?

    Hey guys after 6 months the tranny shop I got my tranny rebuilt at it going to put the proper stall in my Camaro. I told him I wanted a 2500 stall to begin with but he put a 1800-2000 stall in it and said I would like it better. Long story short he is going to put a new torque converter in at no charge and i'm just wonder what stall you all would go with 2500-3000? This is a mostly street driven car that might see very little track time. Check my sig for my engine setup. The tranny is a TH350 the rear gear is 3.42.

    Torque converters are a hard to figure out in imho. I wanted a higher stall so I bought a 10" 3000 from summit. It stalls up just fine but when I'm driving around in traffic it is weird because it is like I can't even feel the shifts between gears. I take this as torque converter slip. But if I'm at a stop and give it hell it works like a champ. Second gear rubber no problem. It is just me getting used to not much grab when putting around and it shifts. I could probably eliminate this by just shifting manually. Then it grabs gears no problem. In hindsight I guess my converter would be considered a loose 3000 rpm. What brand is the shop looking at?

    I guess I'm just a noob at torque converter function. My previous converter was a 12" TCI Sat night special. It was great cruising around but I wanted to try a higher stall for strip action. Maybe I should have just bought a good set of tires to grip at the track before I went and got a converter?? It has been fun at the test and tune though.

    I really want a 3000, but i'm afraid it will hurt my drivability. So I dont know if I should play it safe with a 2500 or go for the 3000.

    Comp Cams recommends a 2200 plus stall converter. If it was me I'd go with a at least a 2500 stall converter. My cam is smaller then yours and I have a 2600/2800 stall converter. Run a good size tranny cooler and you should be fine.

    Curious about this topic. For a driver, why would you ever want a stall higher than your rpm when cruising on the open road or freeway? Wouldn't you want maximum efficiency when cruising? I have no idea.

    For me my Camaro is just a toy so I'm not worried about efficiency. The main reason I need a higher stall is because the converter I have now is too tight and is lugging my engine down at idle in gear.

    I would go somewhere between a 2500-2800 but not any bigger. you dont want to go to big becuase then your converter will be slipping when your up to crusing hwy speeds. you can burn them up in a hurry.

    I use to run a 2400-2600 stall in a similar setup and wouldn't want anymore in mainly street driven car.

    My limited experience is that "advertised stall speed", or whatever you want to call it, is kind of vague. For example, what is labelled a 3000 stall may be way too loose or just right, depending on who makes the converter.

    I can tell you that a converter which is too loose might get you down the dragstrip in a hurry, but it sucks for normal street driving. I had a converter that was supposed to be 3000 stall, but I had to rev the engine a lot to get the car moving, and it would "flash" to over 4000 in higher gears. When it hooked up at full throttle it really moved, but part throttle at lower RPM's it just felt sloppy. And, as mentioned above, it eliminated the "shift feel" almost completely. I had it "tightened", and am much happier with it now.

    Bottom line, I would say when in doubt, go with a lower stall (unless you are just using the car for drag racing).

    Thanks guys! I think a 2500 will probably do it for me. The stall I have in it now the tranny shop said it should stall around 1800-2000 but its more like 1500-1800.
