99 Vortec water pump: fan clutch removal

Discussion in 'Engine Topic' started by rscamaro73, Jun 19, 2011.

  1. OK, I'm stuck...I don't have the proper tools.

What do I do ? I have already taken the water pump off the motor....lol.

(This is on my 99 Tahoe)

Going to change the water pump, radiator, hoses.....flush the coolant to the older green stuff too.

Also changing the tensioner pulley and belt. They went out and I found a leak in the radiator...so i'm doing some "ahead" maintenance

Just did mine a few months ago. I took off the whole thing to. Take off the 4 bolts for pulley to pump. Them the clutch is screwed into the water pump with right handed thread.. I put the pulley in a vise and loosened it with a pipe wrench. 3 hrs to take apart n 20 mins to put back together.

EDIT: I used antiseeze on threads when reinstalling.

I use a giant adjustable open end wrench to take off the fan. Just put the wrench on it and smack it with a dead blow hammer.

  4. I OUGHT TO just buy a bigger crescent wrench ;)

Might swing by and visit a couple parts stores and Sears and see their tool selections...

Ya that will work lol, I didn't have one that would fit.

  6. Me neither. And I even had a 1 5/16" open end wrench. Was about 1/8" off....
