A good 600+ hp SBC combo?

    Ok well the time has come to put a new engine in my Dad's 1969 Z28. He wants a small block engine and atleast 600 hp. This is intended as a "street" car, that belongs on a race track. I was thinking of a 383 with AFR 210 heads with a large dual plane intake if possible. A holley 780 dp, and a MSD 6Al ignition. He wants 11:1 compression, because thats what he raced with. The car currently has a M22 trans and 3.73 gears in a 12 bolt rear. I am trying to persuade him to go with a hydro roller retrofit cam set.

    Now my questions are:
    What intake to use?
    Which cam to use?
    Will the trans hold up?
    Any recomendation on a rotating assembly?
    Are these the right heads?

    Sorry to bug you guys but I figured you all have tried all of the combo's imaginable.

    Tell him to build a solid roller, 6.0L, L92 headed, carb'd LSx motor.

    Either that or a 434" SBC with larger AFR heads and a solid roller.

    I agree. 600 horse out of a 383 is going to be harsh on the street. an LSX setup would probably be more friendly.

    It will be especially hard with a dual plane intake.

    build a 406 and throw a supercharger or a turbo. YOu can get alot more power and be very streetable.

    Either go big inch (427 +) or something smaller with a power adder.....

    As far as the M22, no, it won't last for too long if he plans on hooking the car....... With street tires and lots of spin the trans might last for a little while......

    600 HP not going to happen in a 11:1 383 without a poweradder.You could raise compression to 13:1,but it will not be streetable and the valvetrain will need constant maintenance(e.g. checking valve springs and lifters on a regular basis).

    that will be a tough goal to hit with a 383. Go BB if it was me or power adder.

    that kinda power with streetability, sounds like a turbo is what your looking for.

    I agree with 434. that would be the motor i would build if I was going to stay with the small blocks.

    I would run a blower. Make 600hp all day long on a 383 and be streetable. Or build a 450-500hp 383 with an hidden 150hp nitrous shot.

    A 406 or bigger could do it with a really good set of heads, nasty cam, and a bunch of RPM. I did it on a tunnel rammed, victor jr heads, a big Comp Solid cam, and 11:1 compression on a 406.

    7200rpm was needed and the engine was not a happy camper on the stock block. It ended up spitting a piston out through the side of the block (rod or block failure - there was too much carnage to tell which let go first).
