Best 305 heads

    Ok, without kicking off a debate over whether the 305 is even worth improving or not, I'm looking for advice on the best heads. Not new heads, but instead, what casting numbers or motors should I be looking for while crawing the junk yards and the swap meets. There's gotta be something better than stock, to keep my eyes open for.

    The motor's been bored 40 over, and has a mild cam (204/214 at .050 dur.) with a dual plane intake.

    Get some 416's or 601's their 305 HO heads early to mid 80's. I have a 283 with 416's and they work well

    The only problem is that when you put bigger valves in them without major bowl and port work, they won't flow any better. By that time you could buy aftermarket heads for less. So unless you plan on keeping them permanetly stock, I wouldn't get them.

    I hear ya - but what I'm looking for is that swap meet quest. That thing you look for each time you go, so you have a purpose rather than mindless wandering. I'm figuring 305 heads aren't particularly popular, so they'd probably be pretty cheap. One of those cases where you pick a pair up for 50 bucks, take 'em home, tear 'em down, clean 'em up.

    Car Craft did an article on porting heads yourself a few months back. I've got no idea how to port, and never tried before, but if I had some swap meet heads to practice on, I'd like to give it a try. My local speed shop will flow them for cheap to see if I botched it all up before I use them.

    The 416s are a 60cc chamber - right? Any idea what the 601s are?

    you can pick up 305 vortecs pretty cheap.

    Imho, the best 305 head is the -601!

    They have 1.84"/1.50" valves; hardened seats; a compression chamber that will run from 53 to 58 cc's SO you HAVE to cc them!!

    160 and + cc intake ports and best of all, chambers that are like the old -461 "fuelie" head that are double-quenched!!

    I have a set of both so know!!

    i have 416s with 202/1.6 valves and the heads have some work done to them they are now 70cc heads 525 lift springs 100lbs on the seats and screw in rocker studs and they are opened up a bit my cam is i think is 218/224 480 lift and flat tops also its 40 over.and it has great snap for the street for a guy thats 38 years yung with kids .ps i love my 305 416 heads:confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:

    Steve, I have some heads from a 283. The valves are small, but the heads can be re-machined to fit up to 2.02" valves. They are 60cc chambers. You can have them for the cost of shipping if you want. If you are interested, let me know and I'll get the casting numbers and pics for you.

    Not true. You have to use a throat cutter anyways to open up under the valve, and it flows better. Any larger than a 1.94 is a waste though because the short turn radius is cast for the 1.84" valves the hipo 305's had. With some port work the 2.02 valve will work. Funny thing is that the 1.84 intake valve 416, 601, and 801 castings flow as much as the 1.94 350 castings from the same era.

    Go to thirdgen.org and look up the porting articles on there. They are getting about 230-240cfm out of the above 305 heads from amateur porters. Thats the same as the 350 heads, but they are cheaper, and have smaller, better designed chambers.
