I have been acquiring parts for a new engine build and could use some guidance in selecting a cam.

    Engine specs so far.

    cast crank and rods
    dish piston comp. around 10.4/1
    edelbrock etec 200 heads
roller rockers 1.5 or 1.6 ratio (haven't bought yet)
    rpm intake
    750 Holley carb
    2500 stall TH350
    3:73 gears
    1 5/8 tube headers

This engine will be put in a street strip car.
I contacted comp cams and they reccommended an XE 274

If comp cams xe grinds dont work I would look into Lunati Voodoo line I would run #60104 233/241 @.050 or thier #60105 241/249 @ .050 for your that sbc 400.

If you are looking for a budget flat tappet hydraulic cam I would use part # 915-110591 from Speedway motors. It specs .480/.494 228/234 @ .050 on a 106 lsa and sells for $69.95. I am currently using this cam in a 400 sbc in a truck with a similar converter and it works well. However with those heads I would look for similar .050 duration with more lift on the 106 lsa. I would use comp cams XFI lobes and the 1.6 rockers. The 274 XFI intake lobe will give you around .535 lift with the 1.6 rocker.

Silver75, are you going to use the stock 400 5.565" rods or are you going to use a longer 5.7" or 6" rod? I would go with at least a 5.7" rod. I went with 6" rods in my mild 385 stroker.

I was going to use a Comp Cam Xtreme Energy hydraulic flat tappet cam until I started hearing and reading that CC's Xtreme Energy series cams are noisy and that CC's is having higher then usual warranty issues with this series of cam compared to their other series. Two different local machine shops, places that sell them Summit and Jegs to name a few and even guys on this site told me the same thing.

I went with a Lunati Voodoo hydraulic flat tappet cam instead. I'm not anti CC. I thought real hard about using one of their Dual Energy cams. It was actually the best cam on their Camquest6 program. It made the most power and torque at the RPM ranges I was looking for. Which from my understanding is more accurate with that program then the power numbers it shows. I'm using their roller tip rocker arms too.

Just something for you to think about.

Isky 280 or 292 megacam. I personally would go with the hotter 292 - it is on a 108 LSA and really rumbles.

XE274 or XE282 would be excellent street/strip cams in that engine.

I would look for a cam in the 240 @.050 range minimum.

The 406 "absorbs" more cam than other SBC due to it's cubes and unshrouded valves.

240/244 would be a good place to start with a hydraulic profile.

The tighter LSA makes a mid range killer but will suffer a more erratic idle.

If it were my combo it would be done on a 108.
I custom order cams though and rarely run a shelf cam.

It will idle decent and pull from 2000 rpm with a torque curve like a locomotive.

I prefer some of the older profiles in a street oriented combo. Comp Magnum lobes. Plenty aggressive lobe, not giving up much HP to the "latest greatest" but more stable and reliable.

Thanks for all of the responses. I have been looking at a bunch of the grinds that you folks have recommended. I was planning on a smaller cam, I am glad I posted this on here before buying.

    Hey guys,

I am resurrecting this post to finalize the cam. I wanted to add that I have power brakes and would like them to fuction correctly in the car. I also will be running 1.6 rockers on this engine.

    Cam choices

    Voodoo 60104
    110 lsa/ ICL 106

    Lunati 07102
    108 lsa/ 104 icl

    Lunati 07103
    108 las/ icl 104

    Isky 292 Mega
    108 lsa

    Thanks again,

I built an engine quite similar for a customer maybe 10 yrs ago. Performer RPM heads, similar compression, etc. I used the XE274H flat tappet cam, it pulled very nice from 3000 (converter flash) to well past 6000. Not sure how much more you'll need. The engine felt like it would happily turn 6500+ but the stock cast crank/350 rods/external balance shouldn't be that high.

If you had a 4000+ stall I would look for a larger cam.
