I have a chance to pick up a carpet (new) for cheap- $50. it is for later 2nd gens (79-80-81) I wnat to put it in a '71...will it fit OK? I know the floor pan changes to accomodate the cat but don't know if it will impact the carpet fit.

    thanks

A good quality molded carpet will have the hump molded in the passenger side floor for the catalytic converter. Your 71 will have the flatter floor, so expect it to give you some fitment problems in that area. If you really care about the car, you might be better off getting one that fits your floor correctly.

It all depends on how particular you are about the fit. If you want it to fit perfectly, you will need to fill in the "cat hump" with some sort of structure (or foam?), otherwise it will be a terrible fit. A quality carpet for that car only costs about $125. It depends on whether you want to save the money, or get it right.
