Parachute mount, wing, video...

    Kyle, here's my chute mount that I finished tonight.. I think the anchor might be a little high, especially with the wing.... Thanks to South Side Customs in Kennedale TX for the wing... I still need to have it powdercoated.. It's gonna be black.. Thanks to Tony (scrapmetal) for referring me to SSC!!!

    Looks great.

    Just FYI, I think the nhra sent out a tech notice recently that they will be checking dual chute mounts closer.
    They are cracking down on the single horizontal bolt set up. They want the dual bolt attachment style.
    I would hate for you to finish it up and make it all pretty and have to recut and weld yours??

    I thought the anchor point had to be in a direct line with the crankshaft, about 4 inches below the bumper on our cars........................?

    Yeah, I've read on it... The clevis actually has two NAS bolts.. It has one that goes in each side to a threaded piece in the middle. I'm still not sure if the rules mean that the car has to have two independent anchor points, or each chute has to have it's own 1/2" bolt... If it's that each has to have its own bolt, then I'm good.. If it's that each has to have independent anchor points, then 90% of the dual chute setups in the world have to be re-done!

    My chassis guy swears that it's inline with the CAMshaft, not the Crankshaft... I know I've seen a lot through the license plate like that, in fact my 76 is through the plate.. But I've also seen a lot with the anchor below the bumper...

    You should be fine, I was just trying to help. I took it to mean 2 bolts also.
    From the photo I thought you had one long bolt all the way through. Mine has one anchor with 2 vertical bolts.
    At 1st I was freaking out also, until I re-read it. Actually I'm glad mine is vertical, I'm building a push bar for next year.
    My wife is the worlds worse tow girl. She never remembers which lane we're in and she keeps hitting the brakes.
    She just doesn't get that you never use the golf cart brakes.

    As for the placement of the attachment point on our cars. I built my own chute.
    I called and asked 6-7 chassis guys where to attach the chute. They all said 100% that our cars are the easiest to figure out.
    On anything that has been lowered the gas cap hole is perfect. If the car is left high, like stock ride height,
    then you can go a little lower. I don't remember anyone saying the center point is below the bumper.
    That would be pretty damn low, especially on my car. I would worry about the rear of the car trying to climb up at high speed
    when the chutes hit?? I know at ~160 when mine hit, the rear end stays down, and feels nice & stable.

    I saw this post on another site, fwiw....

    "Just announced NHRA Safety Rules additions for 2010:

    1. To prevent transmission leaks, all cars running 10.99 seconds or quicker must have an NHRA-accepted locking-type dipstick in the transmission.

    2. To improve the strength-mounting point of parachutes on all vehicles running more than 150 mph, parachutes must have their own independent mounting sleeved half-inch-minimum steel bolts or pins. Material around the holes for the bolts/pins must be equal to or greater than the bolt/pin size.

    3. All drivers currently required to SFI Spec 3.2A/1 fire jackets will now also be required to wear SFI Spec 3.2A/1 fire pants.

    Looks good dude! Mine will just be a single. Should be fairly easy. I won't even need one anytime soon so no biggie. You, on the other hand, are going to have a rocket ship from the get-go!
