Tried it. It opens and closes slowly as mentioned. The lower radiator hose isn't getting hot though.
I know my thermostat works correctly. I removed the housing and saw that it was open in the warm coolant. I picked it up and watched it close back...

Then it would be pushing coolant up past the thermostat, through the upper radiator hose, and mostly likely surging coolant out of the radiator...
Maybe my water pump is bad. My bottom hose never got warm.
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but isn't there a tool out there to expedite this process. I've lost patience for the old school method.
I've had to rent one many times before. It's just time to buy one now. Amazon, eBay, and Harbor Freight all have them starting @ $80.
