1970 camaro SS396 L-34.

    both this L-34 and my 1970 SS396 L-78 (sold 2001) always had trouble closing the doors. If I do not slam it hard it will not close flush to body. Neither car had sagging doors due to worn hinges. Can anybody out their let me know is this the way it is. Or maybe I need new lock assemblies.

    How about when the glass is rolled halfway down?Same?How does the door sit in the opening when its closed,and latched.Is it flush with the body,or is it in a little.Post up pics of your closed,latched door.And another pic of the latch post,and another of the weatherstripping.

    Has the car done this since new, or is it something that happened with age? I've seen lots of vehicles that develope this problem with age. What happens is the latch wears to the point that there is lots of slip in it so the parts need to move too far before a solid latch occurs.

    My Son's 69 El Camino did this, and we fixed it by finding a used set of latches in the junkyard. The junkyard latches had almost no movement when latched while his original ones were worn to the point that they moved a lot when latched so they were no longer latching crisply in the correct position

    Have the door weatherstrips been changed? Aftermarket ones aren't always correct .

    1970 camaro SS396 L-34 door problems.

    Thanks to all who responded. I will check the latches. Also it received new repro door weatherstripping, maybe it to thick and keeps the door from closing flush.

    The weatherstrips will be the problem. Try to find latex w/strips. I used them on my 67 and they work great.

    I've found that unless you have original GM weatherstrip gaskets the doors won't close the same.... My passenger side door has NOS GM gaskets on both upper & lower and it closes PERFECT! However, my drivers side door has a nos GM gasket on the upper but on the lower I have an OER and closes pretty hard, even after 1 year I still have to slam it. The OER gasket doesn't feel as soft/flexible as the original GM gaskets.

    The metros fit fine and close fine.

    Camaro specialties states that they have the latex w/strips for second gens. I have bought from them before and bob the owner is a real car guy. I bought mine from Jim stubbings at heartbeat city for my 67. Another great guy who wouldn't sell parts if he wouldn't use them on his own car.
