ok just found out this 71 z28 4 speed munci does not have the speedometer cable. Done a search and really confusing. Did this car come with two cables? Do they still offer a direct replacement. Any info would be helpful. Ricky

Can someone tell me on a 71 z28 Muncie what side did the speedometer hook to on the tail shaft. Driver or passenger? I’m thinking after 1969 it was on passenger.

Thinking I may run a one piece.

In 71, the speedo-cable attaches on the passenger side on Muncie applications and the cable is one piece...I do not recall the actual length...seems to me it was like 60" or so. Unfortunately, I do not have one accessible to measure, but hopefully another member can chime in with the length.

Yes the length would help. It’s going be around 76” the way I’m routing it.

Ok if someone can tell me how it routes back up over bell housing and thru the backdrive gears up thru firewall would help a lot. Sorry guys but this car don’t have one for me to know. Thanks Ricky

4E1A7A58-5360-443B-8C5F-14D626EB77D5.jpeg It seems to go underneath the transmission . This is a 73 but I believe it is the same.

Well I don’t see a reason for it to go under the transmission. Where it comes out of firewall it can hug the firewall about 18” and drop right over the bell housing. I have no idea if my way is correct.

I think early ones may have. Most if not all 70's did. Nearest I have been able to discover is the F60 tires and 3.73's didn't have a good gear-only solution so they added the .8241:1 ratio box on the trans.
These seem to be one of the first things people took off so there are many believed to be "original" cars without them.

who knows .. maybe it was hanging down on the line as the trans and motor came up and the line worker would have difficulty reaching over the transition . here is clill 74 Z28 less than 1000 mile car . speedo 2.jpg

Yep it’s running under the trans. Maybe somebody with a 71 4speed will look and chime in. I honestly don’t see a reason it can’t run over the bell housing. I think 76” cable will work but will be tight.
