I know you said the floors and frame rails look good. Have you tried hitting them with a hammer/jabbing with a screwdriver ? Something may look okay but could be paper thin. That rust in the door jamb and cowl area front would make me really concerned. Just about any Chevrolet motor/trans combo will "look" correct so go with what you like or can afford at this time....unless you get a visit from Publishers Clearing House ;)

yes have poked and proded all metal. thats how i found the holes in the jamb. it is acutally more common than you think. i spent a few years in FL and the salt spray near the coast will end up in the weirdest places, especially if the vehicle sits alot. look like this Z was under a tarp with a few holes in it and thats were rust is. but it wouldnt stick to the bottom of the car that is why the pans are straight. I have removes the gas tank and there is some slight rust threw there, but that is b/c the lid seal is shot and water just seeped into the trunk. even the gas tank is OE and in absolutley great shape. They do make repair "complete rockers" for the jambs but probably the same quality as other aftermarket metal. Hope to find a donar car soon.
