Did the 71 SS camaros come available with the runway stripes as a factory option? Or was that just the Z-28? My car has a factory vinyl roof, has any one put the stripes on one with a vinyl roof (any pics?), not sure if I should romove the vinyl for that to look right.

Also, I would like to add front and rear spoiler. I prefer the low one piece spoiler, is that factory correct for a 71 ss, or would the three piece higher spoiler be correct?

    Thanks

no 2nd generation Camaro SS ever came from the factory with stripes

the only paint added to an SS was the blacked out rear panel the big blocks came with

spoilers and stripes are personal preferences

there are those that prefer the "as delivered" appearance

then there are those that like to add factory "features" that other cars had to their car, whether it be stripes, spoilers, wheels, etc

It is YOUR car, make it YOUR dream come true

IF you like the short spoiler, by all means add it (I am ALSO a fan of the short spoiler, but I digress)

IF you do not like the vinyl roof look, then take it off

HOWEVER, if you have a numbers matching SS, ANY modification (factory or not) you make MAY affect its future value or the ability for you to sell it as most people prefer the "as delivered" condition when they buy

Thanks for reply, you are right. Make it it look the way i want it, I think I will do that. I think I won't do radical changes as it is a #'s matching, but make it so it could go back to factory look if ever sold in the future. I sometimes get hung up on changing for value sake, but I like the stripes and spoilers, and don't like the vinyl tops, my preference only.
Thanks for the peace of mind.

whatever you decide on as far as stripes/colors go, I would suggest you "photoshop" a picture of your car BEFORE you make the decision

there are people that do that for a living

one of the best I know of is murray pfaff (a real nice car guy):

(Hot Rod Magazine likes him too ...)

RPO D-80 was the Camaro optional spoiler package in '71. It consisted of the tall 3 piece unit and included the front spoiler which was shipped loose and dealer installed.

The short spoiler was standard on RPO Z-28 in '71 when RPO-D-80 was NOT ordered.

Thanks for the info 70copo, that thread was an interesting read. Mine TT just says Z27. I want to add the stripes and low spoiler for my own personal preference (stripes & spoilers make these car stand out!). I don't like taking away the originality, but I also plan on keeping the car for sometime and enjoying. If I ever get the urge to sell the car I think honesty is the best policy on these old cars, either put it back to original (if it can be afforded for value sake), or let the buyer know what you did. Unfortunately, it doesn't happen that way all the time.
    Good info though, & thanks.
