Accessory Bracket Question
I too am doing a '78 LT1 California Smog Legal conversion, just started a few weeks ago Located HERE:
Question: On the accessory bracket, I want to keep the AC compressor. Do you know if it has sufficient clearance? Or does the sub frame need to be pocketed? I understand it will need to be notched to clear the control arm, will the suspension interfere? I'll be watching your thread to see how yours comes along too.
I not 100 percent clear on your questions, but I will try to help.
AC Compressor will NOT fit where it mounts on a B-body (yours) or F-body (mine)
only the Corvette LT1 (which is on top drivers side). In order to use the lower
mounting point, you have to notch the subframe. I didnt want to go that route.
My plan was to get the Bowers setup (Corvette location) and run Corvette hoses.
They also sell the AC delete pulley, which is a copy of the GM I used. It puts the
compressor right back where it was originally on a 2nd Gen.
The accessory bracket (Alt/PS/AC) needs to be notched to clear the front upper
bushing on the control arm. I have a few pictures of this contact. It was so bad
in my case the passenger side motor mount wouldnt line up.
I wont be tackling the AC compressor install any time soon, so watching my thread
for that info wont "come along" for a while. As far as the swap, make some coffee
and start reading ... I am already approaching my first "regular" smog test in April!!
This will be the first official use of the BAR sticker. My smog guy already saw the
car though, I brought it by after we passed the BAR inspection on the first try.
Fits nice and just about done. thanks for all your help
