You can use a non AC heater box And it will work. I kept the AC heater core and just ran the heater hoses different from non AC cars

    No.

This might help visualize. what's under the dash matches the firewall opening. Even the non ac cars have openings but its different and has matching under dash parts.

If you want to keep your current heat get an AC deletd box.

The blower/fan pulls air from the round hole behind the fender and pushes it through the rectangular hole in the firewall.

The electric ones suck so if you want an easy bare bones defrost setup
    1) get this https://www.classicindustries.com/product/all-years/chevrolet/camaro/parts/14444.html

    2) Gut the factory heater box, replace the heater core, blank off all outlets except the one that goes to the windscreen ducts and wire or glue the x2 gates open/shut so the air passes through the new core and to the windscreen ducts

    3) wire up the switch of your choice to operate the blower motor with the help of a relay. My 77 had the optional rear Defog paddle switch on the dash so I used that, but you can also reuse the factory one or any 2-3 position switch.
