2308 Pistons are for a 427, I think. 2287 is the big dome 396 piston. Regardless, I have run L2308 TRWs with an 049 head. Never an issue. I used cheap felpro rebuilder head gaskets, not that that matters.

okay this is what i was told to do with the heads
i put them on the block with NO head gasket put two bolts
in to hold them on leave space so the head can lift up if the
pistons hit the head this is on my stand i turned it over and it was
good.i will be okay with high 12.+ compression ratio but do i need steel gasket
for the heads ?? .041 head or .039 gaskets ?? and on my block there is only one water hole and the gaskets have 3 this is at the bottom of the block they are about the size of a dime can i drill them ??

As I remember form my TRW book, 2307 were 454 pistons and 2308 were for a 427. Both are open chambered pistons, but with 781 or 049 you need to do a little grinding on the exhaust side of the chamber to clear the domes.

i put the haeds on the block with no gasket
and two bolts left them lose and turned it
over by hand on the stand the heads did not
lift up at all so i think iam good ?

the block # 3969854 comes up as 396-402-454
    # on front pad CEOA61819
so iam thinking its a 402 with 427 pistons

Somebody had bored your block to 427 specs. Fair enough. I've seen it done before. You don't need steel shim head gaskets. Just run plain re-builder blue felpros.

NOW i have a ? about the block there is only one hole for water at
the bottom by the bolts its about the size of a dime the gaskets
have 3 holes the heads also have the holes can i drill them out ??

for the gaskets i was told to run felpro 1071 .041
    or felpro 1037 .039
    the 049 heads are 113cc
    pistons are 50cc
so i will be around 12.1

    thanks for your help

I've taken clay and laid it over the top of the piston with the head bolted down on a used head gasket and with lifters and push rods installed and rotated slowly and then removed the head and cross cut the clay and measured I think you had to have 0.60 clearance I may be wrong on this its been along time but I could see how everything worked as a final assembly.
