I'm currently in the process of building a 71 and although I'm not at the stage of a trans, I'm trying to plan my attack. My plan is a street car with an appearance at the track every now and then. I'm shooting for 400-450 hp from my motor, so the million dollar question is, what is the best O/D for my car, and what do I need to hook it up?

    I don't know much about the difference btw a 700r4 and a 4L60 or 80 trans.

All input and advise would be appreciated.

The 700R4 is the 1980's version of the 90's 4L60 trans, and the 4L60e is the newest electronic version of it.
A 700R4 used a Throttle Valve cable to get the proper pressures and shift points.
A newer 4L60e uses a computer to do all that.

The 4L80e is basically an updated computer controlled overdrive version of the TH400.
    The billy badass.

I'm sure a beefed up 700R4 would do ya just fine if that's GROSS hp you're talking about.

I put a built 2004r in my 71. Its the same size as the th350 I took out so the driveshaft is the same lenth. I've had a 700r4 and the gearing in the 2004r is better. 700r4 have a really steep 1st gear and a not steep enough 2nd gear. whatever you choose you're gonna love the overdrive when ya hit the highway. Its the best modification I've made.

I have a 200-4R trans behind the 462 in my Buick. No problems. Go over to turbobuick.com. There is always one for sale over there.

They do have to be built up to take the abuse of more horsepower. Expect to pay around $2-3K for a good unit.
