How does this bulb not come on except when a door is open or the light switch is rotated?

Power comes through the clock/cig/ ctsy lp fuse (which is always hot) and out through an orange wire to the bulb. After leaving the bulb what keeps the circuit open? What closes it?

    What the electrical diagram shows
The ground symbol at the light fixture but not clear what the ground spot is.
An orange wire (power) which mine has
A black wire (going to ground). Mine is white but can not determine where the end connects

I am looking to insert two LED light strips that light up when a door opens or the light switch is rotated. Could insert on the white wire from the dome light before reaching the 3-way split to both doors and light switch but maybe an install in the console circuit might be better. To determine this need to know why the console light comes on only when doors are open or light knob is rotated

The door switches supply ground to the lights when the door is opened. The light switch does the same. When neither of these switches is supplying a ground, the lights will be off.
If you want additional lights on this circuit, you simply wire them exactly the way the factory did. They need power from the orange wire and ground from the switches.

OK. Definitely better to insert into the console circuit. Somewhere the white wire joins the white wires connected to the door jam switches. The electrical diagram is wrong.
