Door alignment woes

    If all else fails, wrap a towel around a piece of wood (1x1 or 2x2), put it between rocker and door at the rear, and push on the top of the door at the top rear.

    ^^^^ X2, in my body shop days (40 years ago) that was a common adjustment on these cars, 2x4 under the door resting on the rocker and lifting a bit too..
    Sometimes the shell just gets a bit out of whack..

    I tried the block of wood trick. I get it to flex but can't get my 250lb+ self to put enough tweak in it to get it to take a set. I'd be afraid to use a mechanical method like a come along or ratchet strap and buckle anything.

    Upon further inspection it does look like the original door that wasn't reskinned. I assume at some point it took a hit to tweak the door, it does have filler.

    If I strip the skin off the shell, I imagine it will be easier to tweak back using the door frame flange for alignment.

    I ended removing the skin, the frame still has a significant amount of rigidity to it. I plan to bolt it up, use the flange the skin wraps around to align to the body (I left a section of skin on to match to the A pillar). If I cant warp (or unwarp) the shell as it is I suppose I can slice thru the crash beam and weld it back when done.

    I'm just spitballin here but has anyone tried a thin layer of grease in behind the hinge where it mounts to the body? My thoughts are twofold, one to ease the adjusting of the door but 2 to prevent some of the rust that happens in that spot over time. Or would it just make it easier for the door to come out of alignment?

    After bolting the skinless frame to the car, the fit was better. The skin had evidence of significant damage in the middle with holes drilled for a slide hammer to pull it out. Perhaps the skin was tweaking the frame.

    Anyway, I still had to adjust it a bit more by using the block of wood trick and now it seems acceptable.

    Now to figure out how to install a door skin properly....

    What's the plan, glue or welding? Different procedures.

    Don't know yet. Probably replicate the factory welds up top. Glue around the perimeter? Still got research to do.

    I'm glad removing the skin allowed the shell to get worked back into shape.
    (I was pretty sure that would work.)
