Edelbrock E-street heads or not?

    I need some heads for my 350 build and I am wondering what opinion you guys have of the E-street heads from Edelbrock?

    The basic spec of the engine will be:
    350 bored .030 over
    Stock cast crank
    Scat or Eagle Rods
    TRW high comp (10.2:1 with 70cc heads) forged pistons
    Lunati Voodoo 268/276 cam

    So I need some heads to match up with it...

    I have been recommended the E-street heads, but have concerns that people have reported valve spring breakages over 5500 rpm. And I plan on taking the engine to around 6500rpm.

    Of course I could change the springs, but then dont know whats available to fit in the 1.25" OD seats of the Edelbrock head. Then its into more expense of matching up with retainers etc etc.

    Bear in mind that although the E Street heads cost you guys $900 or so in the US. For me to buy a set from my local parts guy I am looking at the equivalent of $1,386 and it doesnt work out much cheaper for me to get them shipped from the USA either by the time you add shipping, tax and duty.

    So what would you recommend?

    i have no experience with these heads, but i am also in the market. not to hi jack, but can some one post experiences/opinions/recommendations on edelbrock's other cylinder head options as answer OP questions.

    In that price range what are your other options? None I would guess.
    I bought a set for my 350 that is slated to go into the '71 RS/SS. The motor is assmebled and ran fine on the test stand but I have yet to run them on the street. I know it's not much feedback but it's something:happy:. FWIW, for the price you get an awful lot even if they are not exactly perfect for your particular application - you get a good base that needs little mod to work for you. On the down side, they are pretty much an old school design.

    being that you are out of the USA, and I am assuming you have limited availability to American Performance products in your country, I would assume that you would have to order almost anything to be shipped to you.

    With that being said, I would have you consider spending a little more money and look at a Vortec head and intake conversion. That would be more of a match for the cam spec you posted and could have a more efficient as well as more responsive street engine combination.

    Thanks for the feedback, the Vortec heads are very scarce over here and from what I understand were only available with a 64cc chamber which takes my compression well above pump gas territory (just over 11:1). Unless I can find an already modified set then its a non-starter I think as it would cost me nearly as much to have them modified over here as it would to buy new heads.

    I can get almost all performance parts from a local american specialist, they just cost at least 30-40% more than if I were based in the US.

    I was assuming you were still in the process of building up your short block and could adjust your piston selection to work with 64 cc heads.

    If you are already set with the pistons you have, you may want to consider the standard Edelbrock RPM heads in 70 cc's.

    There are cheaper cast iron performance heads that would do well but the savings cost in initial purchase price will probably be made up in shipping costs to you.

    Ah no sorry, I already have all the short block components, and bought it as a heap of parts. I would ideally like to find some heads to work with the existing combo rather than have to change pistons.

    The RPM heads look ok, I guess my question really was has anyone modified the E-street heads to cope with higher revs? If so what did you use?

    The E-street heads are not as friendly to modifications as the RPM heads. They are more for the low compression, bolt on market and the seat areas under the springs don't allow for too much more pressure, IMO.

    we've used them on a couple of mild to mid performance applications and they work well for the persons that want to pull them out of the box, wipe them down and bolt them on and go...

    I believe you will be spending less on the RPM Performer heads and having less issues in the long run

    The Estreets are a great budget head. We have used them on up to 430HP 383 strokers and have not had a problem. Its virtually the same head as the RPM line minus different valve seals, springs and valves.

    With your combination, and a .500 ish lift cam...I dont see you taking this engine up to 6500RPM....probably wont make much power past about 5600rpm...shift around 6k.
