edelbrock wont idle in gear

    I have a three yr old 1406 vortec headed flat top piston, mild can 355. It dies in gear, even with a 1500 rpm idle. Ran fine last year. I have fresh 93 octane gas in it. I tried adjusting the carb and noticed that I can turn the drivers side screw all the way in and out without any change in the idle, the passengers side screw works well. Am I right to assume that both screws should have an equal effect on the idle? Think I need to rebuild the carb? And the way I wanted to adjust the carb is to turn each screw individually until I have the highest idle, is that correct? Thanks for any help!

    Maybe your idle is set high enough that you are out of the idle circuit and into the cruise? Make sure your timing is correct to start, probably around 12 degrees at idle. A 1406 with a mild cam should be ok starting with about 1.5 turns out on the idle mixture screws. It's not on the fast idle cam, is it? The 1406 doesn't have a power valve, so no worries there. Always check your float height, it is an Edelbrock.

    No mike I bought this carb brand new a few years ago. The one i bought from you is happily feeding the 350 on my friends 80. I took it apart and checked the float heights before even using it, they should still be fine. My timing was at 16, I backed it down to 12 a few days ago when I was having some hot starting issues. SO I pretty much have it fixed! Figuring it was just a plugged passage, I pulled out the mixture screw, sprayed in a ton of carb cleaner and blew it out with compressed air. I was able to get it adjusted well enough to idle in gear at least, still have a long way to go. There's a nasty part throttle surge and my plugs are white, so IM lean.

    I'm having the same issue, just started yesterday. Messing with it today no luck so far checked plugs, timing, vacuum leaks. No luck there so i'm thinking carb too. Looked in my book and it looks like there is filters inside the carb with the jets, thinking about taking it apart and checking them, and there is metering rods that should be able to come out without taking anything apart. I'm going to try that first and then I might try your idea and pull the mixture screws and flush out, they didn't change idle either.

    I knew I had a plugged passage when I took the screw completely OUT and it didn't change the idle. Let us know what you find out!

    I have the idle set to 1400 in park and that gives me a 700 rpm idle in gear. That's with the mixture screws set at two complete turns out, untuned. I went for a drive to warm it up and the line for my oil pressure gauge blew. Jeez what a mess! I'll report back after a couple of days of cleanup.... Btw what do you guys idle at in park and in gear? I'd like to have a 700 rpm gear idle and 950 rpm or less park idle...

    I think that's to high in park, how much vacuum do you have. If you have low vacuum you might have to change the springs on the step down rod. I had that issue and the springs worked for me.
