The 5.3 can be bored to LS1 size, giving you an iron block LS1. My 2000 6 speed 3.42 gear factory stripper Z28 ran 13.30's with just a airbox lid when it was new. With SLP loudmouth, thermostat, filter, and sticky tire it ran 12.80's. I suspect it would still run those numbers with 127,000 miles on it. (I drive it every day) Point here is it's just fine to use a 5.3 to do a swap. You could upgrade to 5.7. or 6.0 later.

Only downsides to a 5.3L are the early one's were plagued with piston slap
Later one's ate up a quart of oil frequently it seems I've read alot.

So I dunno lately about the 5.3L swaps......that's one reason I went to the 6.0L
I'm starting to believe the smaller truck motors weren't built as well.

the 5.3's were fine. They use about the same amount of oil as an LS2 and as far as Piston slap shows, the LS1's were known for that too.

My '06 Silverado has not given me a single problem as far as the engine is concerned, 99200 miles and does not use a drop of oil. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones?
