Calif just gave Hot Rodders an Car enthusiasts another Nighmare

AB1824 is new law that law enforcement can now cite car owners for loud exhaust and fine the driver $1k plus a trip to a referee station to have it looked at

If your car measures 95db's or louder from a few feet away you're in violation

Somebody has to keep you hippies in line. :)

Seems like a low threshold for a fine though.

Many States and Cities have had similar laws for years. Often in the past, Officers didn't have equipment to measure the sound level so enforcement was left to the discretion of the Officer.

Wonder how loud my new 406sbc will be , might have to get quieter mufflers and put the tail pipes back on . Going to be hard to fit 3.5" tail pipes up over the axle

Might be keeping a db meter in my glove box

My guess is there won't be a lot of enforcement unless you act like an ass and catch their attention somehow. There are a few "save the world one ticket at a time" guys out there but most patrol cops I talk to don't like writing tickets. All bets are off for motor officers, they live for it.

What gets me they will be measuring sound from 20" away from the tail pipe doing a no load test

I know race tracks have sound ordinances but measure from a hundred yards away which I think is more fair

My understanding is the law really hasn't changed, but the penalty has. instead of giving a simple failure to repair ticket (maybe that buy some leeway and addres relatively cheap?) they are now giving $1000 tickets that they can keep giving you. am I close?

Seems like a revenue scam sold as an anti street racing law

Yes prior it was just a fix it ticket that you just had signed off

I believe this new version of the sound ordinances is a result from the recent increase in street takeovers in California

No Bonzo is right it's a money grab. If I were you I'd be more worried about a trip to the referee then the money.
