Is there something I can buy to do this? Is there a dipping process?

The chrome section will be separated from the surrounding casing and the vent slats inside the chrome coated section will be removed.

On a junk one, the casing halves pulled apart. Removed the slats assembly from the chrome housing by grinding and drilling out 4 very small rivets with a Dremel. Install will be with #4 machine screws

An internet search should come up with several hits. For a DIY project Alclad has a You tube vidio talking about using their product "Alclad II Lacquer Chrome"
Also you can check out GCar website as an additional source for plastic rechroming.

I used a company to do so some plastic re-chroming for a few items. It wasnt cheap, but they did a fantastic job. The one thing to note is that I am not sure if they can chrome just the outer edges like OEM. In my case they chromed the entire piece.

This is the company I used: Layson's Restoration. The offer a plastic re-chroming service, but I dont know if they can chrome only a portion of the item. There was a bit of a wait, but I would use them again in a heartbeat.

I have seen people use the reproduction vents and move the original vent doors. You can remove the plastic welds and reweld glue them into the new reproduction chrome housings. I have not personally done it. But it's a alternative to rechroming. You will have to disassemble them anyway to get the originals chromed.

I used a two step paint process made by Spaz to redo my 68 GTO's dash chrome accent - IMG_0530.JPG

Rick Nelson did this on a 70Z restoration.

    Photos start here:

The 70's were the only ones with smooth vanes. The OER repops which are good otherwise have the 71-later textured vanes.

Thanks for the ideas. The chrome finish will be stripped and painted SEM Landau Black as is the rest of the vent. A chrome finish does not appeal to me, especially at the two center dash vents having three colors (dash, chrome and black). For uniformity, with the center vents all black the outer vents need to be all black.

Wonder if they can wrap the chrome?
