Not going to lie, lately I've been looking for every excuse to go with an LS motor (may still do it eventually), but I was pleasantly surprised to get just over 22 mpg out of the small block on the way up to Good Guys last weekend. Had no idea that was possible from an old Gen 1  Was flat Iowa highway most of the way though, running 75 at about 2500 rpm.

Definitely motivation to re-cam this motor and drop in 3.73's.

that's about right. When we did powertour last year, we averaged about 24 MPG, our combo is 383 stroker, tko 600 and 3.55 rear gear

That's good to know. Funny to think that almost matches what my old 2002 Mustang 4.6L 5-spd could do with a lot newer motor, supposedly less drag and 3.27 gears.

Way back in the day with my carb, th700r4 and 3.42 axle ratio I was getting about 21-22 mpg as well. So yeah sounds about right.

With my EFI now and the highway mode lean cruise kicked in I get about 26-27 mph. So yeah, EFI has its benefits! An LS should even be more efficient than that.
