I did a search but didn't find anything conclusive.

Can someone confirm what is the correct finish for original front seat tracks?

I have a set that is surface rusted at the "feet" and not sure to paint or just blast / clear coat, etc.

My 1970 were just plain (and rust) no sign of finish anywhere except the latch was zinc or otherwise plated (cad?). Springs showed some color but can't remember at this time what colors but the springs where different colors. I disassembled them, soaked them in evaporust for a couple of days, hand buffed the black residue off with some phosphoric acid and steel wool and satin clear coated. Same with the springs but stretched them a bit before soak and paint.

Surface rust IS the original finish. ;)

I don't think they were coated with anything when they were produced or installed.
Blasting them will change the finish.
Electrolytic rust removal would probably leave them as close to factory as you will get.

You could probably use Rem-Oil (or clear coat) on them to keep the surface rust at bay once you had them cleaned up.
I guess it depends upon how "correct" you want them to look.

Should have saved the time and effort of the disassembly and just left them rusty. Really was a pain for so little.

Here are my originals after I cleaned them up. Sprayed with Boeshield. Repainted the return springs 0212181713.jpg 0212181651.jpg 0212181646a.jpg 0212181646b.jpg

Thanks for the info and resto tips. Definitely going to try the Evaporust.

I’ve been thinking of trying Fluid Film to coat them when I do the seats next fall. I’m really impressed with that stuff on other applications.
