I'm just saying I have read a number of guys that drive their cars a lot/hard complaining, FWIW. I also know a local guy using it in a 67 and not having trouble. But he's a cruiser.

The trunk pans are different early vs later 2nd gens. The filler necks are different for the 3 'sub-gens'.

I know the necks are longer in the later models, I didn't think about it and installed a 79 tank in my 77 that a friend had and the neck kept the license plate from closing properly. So I take from that the 74-77 neck will be too short in a 78-81.

How about some pictures and measurements of the necks? Maybe a side view is best, if they are out. I'll try to get some of the '80 tomorrow.

If it's in the zone, at least, I'll do the leg work to see if slight differences will work with various gas nozzles, and then buy the tank and fit it if it does. No BS- I'm totally tired of listening to the "hand drill buzz" of the current Carter, and it's quieter than most aftermarket electrics.

This looks pretty promising. Worst case it looks like the filler neck will be just
a tad recessed into the hole and require better aim.:)

Anymore info on the difference between '76 and '78-'81 tanks?

What is the filler neck length on the '76 tank?

I think it's about 6.5" and it has a slight bend in it. Pic's this weekend if you'd like them

I can measure the '78 tank filler neck tomorrow and post the results.

The '78 filler neck is 10.25 inches along the SIDE of the neck from the braze
at the tank to the end of the metal tube - with the gas cap off. So it looks
like the gas station hose will need to extend into opening a ways down.

That would be a no-go here, because lots of stations have the vapor recovery type nozzles with the spring-loaded rubber around the nozzle.

I guess I'll just get a Tanks, Inc kit and be done with it.:)

Just be careful tightening the fittings down on top when you get it...the threaded portion into the main plate is a tight fit and I sheared the fitting trying to tighten it down...now I have to get something to remove the piece broke ou of the main plate.

And since it's a specialized fitting I have to call tanks inc monday and see if they can ship me a new one....they don't have a email address on thier website so if this place is hard to call I'm going to be pissed big time.
