Thoughts on a TKO in a 70 RS 396

    ... I have a 1970 Z/28 RS 396 mild cam 3.73 12 bolt pos rear end with M22 4 speed ...I’m taching 3 grand or more at 70mph ... needs a new clutch so thinking the TKO 600 is my best option for a drop in , opinions, options , what can I expect rpm wise at 70-75 mph and current prices ?

    An overdrive transmission is the best thing in the world you can do for a car did you drive a lot . Sites like bowler transmissions have rpm calculators you can punch in speed, tire od and gearing to see rpm.



    PS I made this its own thread instead of bumping an 8 year old thread that was about a different transmission

    I think Scott was trying to say an overdrive transmission is the best thing you can do for a car you drive. Not sure what happened though LOL

    Try a taller tire on the back,if you dont like it run a over drive tranny,or a taller rear gear,just depends on what your looking for.

    The Tremac site has a RPM calculator. Make sure you match your engines RPM range to all gears including OD.

    I looked at TKO as well, but I’m going with M23Z Muncie (or autogear) with 3.08 or 3.23’s in the rear. The Z will allow me to use my existing clutch, shifter, and crossmember...

    I currently have a TKO600 5 speed in my 71 Z28. 4.10 gears, 28" diameter rear tires and 5th gear in trans is .64 ratio. I turn ~ 2200 at 70mph.
