Upper radiator hose sucking flat, please help...

    Hey guys we replaced the radiator cap and the upper radiator hose and the problem of the hose sucking flat stopped and the car was running at normal temp for awhile.

    Now its back to getting too hot even just idling for awhile, not sure if the radiator hose stopped getting flat because the newer one was stiffer or if that problem is solved. But im going to guess the overheating problem is the same as before.

    Any ideas why it might do that? With the radiator cap replaced all I can think of is the water pump, anyone have past experience with this problem?

    Did you check and verify that the thermostat opens at temp?? Might be bad. Also start it witht he cap off, you should be able to see the coolant move. You should be able to stick your finger in and feel the water moving past your finger.

    The top hose was going flat?? The top hose is the return line, that shouldn't compress flat.

    Normal early sbc flow is in the bottom hose, out the top of the motor. This sounds suspiciously like you have the water pump turning the wrong direction (for the pump you have) Do you have standard V-belts, serpentine belt, or some aftermarket serpentine belt setup?

    Also I'll add to use a bottom hose with wire inside to help prevent it from collapsing.

    The flow seemed to be moving quite well the last time we checked it (after initially replacing the upper hose) we also replaced the T-Stat at the same time, it seems hard to believe that a brand new T-stat went bad though it could be, when I get home I will double check the flow through the radiator make sure its still moving well. Also its a regular belt system nothing special.

    Does it have an operational recovery system?

    Sounds like it either has the wrong cap or needs a recovery container that's vented to atmosphere.

    My top hose went flat while I was setting up my electric fan and the temperature got to high, no problems after it was set. I don't know what the temp was when it happened, I just got the temp gage working, I did change the thermostat but I don't know if it was a problem or a normal reaction if it gets too hot?

    I was told by an engine builder that the only hoses with springs in them are the cheap ones. he said Gates and the better brand hoses dont have the spring in them because they are of better quality. Ther last 2 bottom hoses ive boguht have been gates and have had no springs in them.

    same things was happening to me..only sucked flat when the engine was shut off and cooled

    found out that the vent tube from my recovory tank was blocked with a screw. Took out the screw that was stuck in the tube so it could vent and it didnt do it anymore
