picked up a set of 993 heads at a yard sale yesterday. they're stripped, of paint grease etc looks like they are fresh out of the shop. no valves are sunk, all looks fresh but the odd thing there looks like only 3 seals with the springs on the heads. is this something a machine shop might do? why someone would rebuild a pair of smog heads l, maybe someone did a budget rebuild? jim

Yep a lot of people will only put seals on the intake valves.
Those are usually the culprits of oiled spark plugs.
When you back off the throttle the vacuum readings go into the 20+ area many times and this will suck oil from the clearances between the intake valve and valve guide.

Some circumstances oil is a good thing to a point.
Like when circle track rules dictate no additives in methanol.. well that is some very dry fuel and I have friends that get their engines to last much longer allowing some oil to get past the guides.

I would thing it was the wrong type oil but it worked and those guys almost never broke down and they won many times.
Results you know speak for themselves.

Years ago we used to use a ford umbrella seal that worked perfect on those old heads, intake and exhaust sides.
