Aren't standard, non-truck tall block, 396/402, 427, 454 and even 502 the same physical size on the outside? The all have a 9.800" deck height. Components can be used/swapped on all of them.

I agree with NYH1 above post 100 %. I have been around/built/ owned and sold these engines for 40 years.

Well, the 8.1L deck height is in the 10 something range, maybe that is what you read. Not much of the 8.1 interchanges with the older BB though.

I guess the tall deck blocks at 10.2” required different intake manifold and or exhaust headers? Is that all? The 10.2 tall decks if I’m understanding correctly origin is the mark 4 BBC engines based on the 8.1 liters like were available in GM pickups? The accessorie drives on front of engine were different or were they same as the older 454-502 blocks?

There are tall deck versions of the older Mark 4 and Gen 5/6 engines and then there is the 8.1L, which is out on its own. The accessory drives for the 8.1 are different than the older engines and don't work on them. Oil pans are wider and intakes are unique due to the intake port design, along with no coolant passages in the intake. Exhaust bolt pattern is the same as the other BBCs. Valve cover bolt pattern is the same, but 8.1 valve covers are shorter.
