    hey everybody
this is kind of a question that i've never seen asked before.

whats the quietest muffler that flows well?

right now i have my olds 455 with headers,2.5 inch h-pipe flowmaster 40 series.

i really loved the sound of strait headers when I'm cruising the car shows, but driving miles on the highway gets a little annoying. even when i had the 40 series hooked up i still have drone even with my interior fully sound deadened

so im planning out my new exhaust system. Im going to be running electric cut outs because i love it loud sometimes but when I'm driving long distances i would love a nice quiet exhaust.

what would help quiet down my exhaust
    larger pipe -smaller pipe
    x pipe- h pipe
turbo muffler - chambered - any other type of muffler
    thicker or thinner pipe
    steel vs stainless steel

    please give me some suggestions

    thanks brad

The basic Dynomax turbo mufflers, the long ones, i.e. 20" case, 25" overall length are great. They were shown in a test by Hot Rod magazine to flow well and be quiet, but that test was many years ago, so there may be something as good or better now. They are inexpensive and I like them, but I did need to modify my floor pan to make space for them.

It is probably too expensive to consider but the Borla stainless steel stree mufflers with the stainless packing and internal baffling are about the quietest free flowing muffler Ive heard.

Yes in tests the Borla XS muffler was the quietest. Their is a thread where I posted all the DB levels of the most popular mufflers somewhere (search) and you shall find

What's that new Cadillac with the 556-HP engine? I bet it has what you want.
