My exhaust noise was fine until I installed a good sound system, now I want the exhaust quieter. May need to install some resonators in the tail pipes.

Why, you have Mondello or Edelbrock heads and a roller cam?

Back in the mid 70's I was cruising around in my 68 SS Chevelle with an L78 engine and caught up with a 69 Camaro at a traffic light. Up until that point nothing on the street had ever left me looking at tail lights fading away. The Camaro pulled into a gas station and I followed it in, we chatted a bit and ask what was under the hood and how he kept it so quiet. The engine was a 12:1 427 with aluminum heads, it was quiet because he had 4 mufflers, 2 on each side.

With today's technology there has to be a way to have a quiet exhaust system without sacrificing flow. It would be nice not only for enjoying music and conversation, but not attracting unwanted attention form law enforcement and neighbors.

I haven't done this yet, but intend to and I THINK it will work...

I have the long (20" case) Dynomax mufflers, which BTW I think are the same thing as the old Walker "hemi" super turbo's. For me, they are about right for normal driving, i.e. sounds good, but not obnoxious. However, there are times where I would like it to be quiet and cruise. I think if I install a single cut out just beyond the X-pipe, it will essentially convert the X pipe into a Y pipe and force all the exhaust through one muffler. For light throttle cruising that won't have any adverse effect and should be very quiet.

remember the hemi mufflers ,they could flow some air back then and kept many of the 12.1/13.1 comp motors very quiet

remember seeing quite a few of those 4 muffler set ups during the late 70's and into the 80's . there was this wicked fast 59 vette with a mech injected 468BBC @ OCIR back in 1982 with (4) mufflers and it was running ;low/mid 10's thru the mufflers !!!, i was definately impressed
