    FlaJunkie, I got to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

and there is one line where it says Default Reg SZ (value not set)

    I dont see anything like (Default) of {09799AFB-AD67-11d1-ABCD-00C04FC30936}

Should anything on that long list be added to that screen

OK, we worked this out on the phone.
    Open Settings
    Apps
    Default apps
    Reset to default...problem fixed.

Apparently some app changed the default app needed to open picture files. That's now fixed.

Some application changed it, most likely.

lila, My above problem was surely caused by operator error (MYSELF)

I evidently did something that made PAINT the default when I went to open any picture..

Again, Many Thanks to FlaJunkie (Jim T) for helping me

I'm glad that this problem is no longer there

I have read your problem and i think there are 2 causes of that.
    1. You selected the paint as default program to open image.
    2. You don't have any image viewer in your OS.
So check yous applications and confirm that any image viewer is there. If not then install it.
If you already have image viewer, then right click and image and select "open with", now select your image viewer application as default opener.

Alas, Microsoft in it's continuing quest to mess with us and make money doing it will be dropping support for Windows 7 in about a year. We use Windows 7 commercial at work and one of the IT guys told me about that when I had a problem with my computer at work.

Not surprising. Software has a short life. Out with the old, in with the new. Usually, the new software is no improvement over the old, but it is newer. And, once a couple of newer versions come out, they can't support and keep up the older ones, so they go down the drain fast.
