Seen beaucoup cast iron cams ... never seen any machining Between lobes.
Dist gears for GM's steel shafts are melonized but appear virtually same as gears on prior distributors.
ZZ4 cam is (was) billet steel and required a melonized dist gear.
JMO, looking at machining Between lobes, the cam pictured is also a billet steel roller ... they're OE SOP sbc GM.
And, another notable attribute is the presence of an eccentric/ lobe for mechanical fuel pump.
I see what I believe may be spalling or pitting on Third lobe forward from dist gear ... is that cyl #7 intake?
can a local auto machine shop (which turns & polishes cranks) ... polish yours out?
JMO, but FI motors are good for Not having a ridge, but still having crosshatch ... even with high...
unlike typical 383, the above GMPP 383 has fifty-thousandths longer (3.8") stroke which shoves rods another 0.025" closer to pan rails/cam lobes.
when/where needed, I've clearanced blocks/rods myself.
FWIW, choice of brand/style of rod can dictate whether any clearancing is required.
WIX 51060 (it has anti-drain back valve and I prefer that, even on sbc/BBC) It has No bypass; OE GM filter mount has a built-in bypass .... NAPA equivalent is 1060
race filters have their place (on race motors) ... but have more...
Within last year, I bought a NOS NIB Edelbrock Qjet. They're still out there, but in private hands (where I got mine). And IIRC I paid right at $400. Very nice piece and wish the Edelbrock Qjet was still in production.
3704817 fp rod is correct for either GM cast iron core or GM billet steel core.
Afaik, all GM rollers are on a billet steel core; both OE series production and crate motors. Well-made, regardless of profile.
If it were mine, I'd provide the balance shop with both damper & flywheel I expect to...
Burr(s) at rings' gap can/will prevent a ring from normal rotation ... always dress those gaps' sharp edges w/ a fine stone.
*edit that's a blueprint sort of job; but is it routine at "the" blueprint ?
Qjets/their intakes in Typical yard nowadays ... crickets
As far as what's wrong w/ the BPE motor ???? ... of course it could be anything or any combo of maladies suggested ... but it seems clear (to me) the buyer shouldn't be saddled with any such worries; none at all. However, one man's...
