Yep, that would be your problem. Exchange it for a gen5/6 B/B one piece seal.
You must be working on an 8.1L.
I use to install these type seals on the 8.1 BBC. Also had the special tool to install to prevent warping the pricey seal.

Newer model engines also require a different flexplate/flywheel for one piece rear seal verses your old style two piece rear seal engine.

I have one similar to it but mine has a 16hp briggs. I've seen these sell for around $1,200.00 w/ some attachments. Mine is a 1978 GT16.
