Technically changing or altering a vin tag is a federal offence.
I would weigh the risk of trying to "correct" it with just leaving it be.
I have seen a few old race cars that have been put back to street car status where they have the problem in reverse.
The firewalls often need to be replaced due to being cut out for roll cages or engine set backs and get replaced with an aftermarket replacement.
Problem there is they dont have the hidden VIN stamped on them.
Plays havoc on international sales etc.
Many States have a process for licensing cars like this. Some just trace the history of the car to their satisfaction and relicense it. If the information available doesn't satisfy them, some States have a category called "rebuilt vehicle" or something similar where they start completely over and issue a State VIN of their own that makes the car legal for use on the roads. They attach their own VIN plate so they car fits their guidelines. A car with a State issued VIN might have complications if it is sold in another State in the future, but often, States will work together on that too.
Only your State jurisdiction can tell you the right way to handle it in your area.
Its hard to say what happened of course...This is what I would do...Does the VIN on the car match the title? If so...leave it alone! You don't know the history of the car and don't know what was done. Its not hard to support that car was a Non AC car or vice versa and the firewall was swapped for a conversion...its possible. Look under the driver side rocker and the 1/4s under the trunk lid. There are codes there too....The 1970 does have 1 year only features....What type of windshield eyebrows does it have?
If the old vin isnt stolen, and the new vin checks out with the DMV,as registered, welcome to the world.
The vin and the title are all that matters. Nobody is going to be removing AC and heater boxes to check legitimacy.
go to a title company get the number you wont or go to a state that will title a car with just a lost title paper andit can be made at home with the ven you wont they will do a title for you like washington tnn that is how they do
Are you suggesting to pursue a title with the AC firewall stamping? Then what the heck will he do about the VIN tag??? LEAVE IT ALONE I SAY....JMO
your right i dont know what i was thinking
