Well it says "gray" for the color on the build sheet ...
Wow Cool ..... ZP3 special paint.
al8apex, thanks for posting so people can actually read the info!! Gray...can't match it up to anything... Anyone got any ideas how to figure this paint code out? It is only 40 years old!!
try contacting people in the paint biz, start with the link I posted above
Great idea! I will give them a call and let you all know what they say...thanks again!
The paint code was probably from another car line, I believed they built Chevelles their also. The other only option would be if it was a fleet color, which I doubt. I would lookup the Dupont paint libary for the 71 colors, and try to match it to the side cowl area behind the fender.
927 denotes a Dupont Metallic body color paint
99942 is the Dupont Mixing Formula
On build sheet..
F&SO - Fleet and Special Order (processing & approval dept in Chevrolet central office often referred to as copo group)
L0204 - L is plant code for the assembly plant, 0204 refers to paint instructions document from F&SO. It could be the 204th special instructions issued to Los Angeles assembly plant (not all would be paint).
4001PA is the pricing schedule for the special paint, don't know what the cost was but 4001AA would have been "no charge". Pricing depended on several factors determined by the F&SO dept
Color could be any GM color except Cadillac Firemist (special paint guns for this coarse metallic) or a color from another brand, Ford, Rambler etc.
You might have to find some old color paint books of the day to locate the color. Maybe a local Dupont store could figure it out but they might not know how or want to be bothered so the play dumb. They did have a gray paint for 1970 Chevelle's.
I posted this a couple of years ago and am now much closer to getting my Camaro painted. I am wondering if anyone knows how to decipher the Dupont Mixing Code 99942? I have been searching and have not been able to locate anyone that can assist. Let me know
Found this site maybe it can help.

sbrown139, Thanks for the tip. I did see this before and just sent them an email. I can't seem to find the code listed but this is a great reference. A few similar colors to what mine was but it is hard to tell from a small sample. I think that I read somewhere that even if the color chosen for a car was last years color, it may need a special paint code if no longer in use. Hopefully, they will come back with some info. Thanks again for the help!
