    Hi all !

So I've seen a '72 which is described as a factory 402 car. The windshield VIN 5th digit is a U so that part ties up. But the odd thing is this - all of the original paperwork shows the same VIN but with a K for a 350 instead of the U for the big block.

Is that how these were turned out back in the day when they were new for some reason ? Does anyone have any explanation ?

    Thanks everyone !

not hard to change a vin#. Seen a dodge at the border from a Barret Jackson auction that had the wrong vin.only reason the guy looked was because he was a dodge fan.vin did not match the body style.

Huh? You mean the 396 was actually a 402? The 70-72 did not get 427s.

I can't see the VIN tag...but does the block have the VIN? What does the trim tag show? I would believe a shipping doc error over the belief that the VIN tag was re-made.

There are some errors in that link about the 402.

The 402 was the response to emissions regulations at the time that where different for engines under 400 ci than for engines over 400 ci. Chevy marketing was heavily invested in the SS396 moniker that it was carried over (still sounds better then SS402). Also Chevy badge 402 equipped cars and trucks as 400s, not to be confused with the newly released 400 SB (2 bbc verses 4 bbc), not sure any small blocks got 400 badges until latter (I could be wrong). I still have a 71 Malibu 400 convertible with the LS3 and had at one time a 1970 C20 with the 402 that was badged as a 400.
