Mine is 0924, and I'm wondering if the difference with the chrome air cleaner lid had to with A/C equipped cars vs non. As we know, the cars without A/C had a dual snorkel base. I have only seen 2 other 72 396 cars, and they both had A/C with painted parts.

I have an old picture of the engine somewhere, and I will have to dig it out. This is how it looks now. 20210219_214827.jpg

Interesting that the window sticker calls out a rear window defroster rather than a defogger. Was there heat back there in 72?

The terms "defroster" and "defogger" were used interchangeably over the years. They don't define the type of system used.

About 15 years ago I owned a very late built 72 big block car (03D) and it had a chrome air cleaner lid. I can't prove it was original to the car but it was the correct lid and air cleaner for a 71/72 Camaro. The car was very original when I owned it.

I am aware of 4 original cars. None had chrome. They are not shown in the assembly manual. Other items, like plug wire brackets, oil cap, etc. are all different and would cause confusion on the assembly line. Some people changed to chrome for the look. They were also a replacement item.

    FWIW the nastyz8 specs pages for ‘71 & ‘72 LS3 engines show 260 & 240 net horses respectively.
