Have a 1972 Z-28. All original but one repaint. 27k original miles. A friend ordered her in January 1972. Was delivered in March 1972. I purchased from him June 1974. I have original title, bill of sale, and protecto plate. Car was ordered with special order color Corvette Steel Cities Gray with black stripes. Firewall tag has dashes where paint code would be. I have been trying for a very long time to find out how many were made with this option in 1972. Can anyone assist?
    Thanks
    Steve

To my knowledge, there were no records kept regarding special paint codes for early 2nd gens. Others will chime in.
    Nice car!

Welcome to the forum very nice looking car. I agree with Billy Dean about the color numbers. I posted a similar question years ago about my Placer Gold 71Z and got the same answer. I know Corvettes kept production numbers for paint.

I had a GM exec once tell me when I worked for Delco-Remy in Anderson that very few were probably made as most dealers did not know the option was available only the larger ones. He also said very few probably still exist?

Hi Steve, always been a big fan of Steel Cities Gray. Don't know if it's the image, but that doesn't look like the right color. Was it repainted black or some darker color of gray?

Interesting that there are Camaros not the same colour as what is listed as an option. I'm thinking they must be quite rare and perhaps quite desirable assuming the car is still the original colour.

By "special paint" do you mean a colour not listed as a colour option then with the "double dash" on the cowl tag where the paint code goes?
