I believe I have a 1972 LT1 Z28
Engine that is currently powering a 1970 Camaro that I am selling. Before I get rid of this car. I am wondering if I should be keeping this engine as I know the 1972 z28 was a limited production car. Not sure if the engine was though or if it is just another dime a dozen SBC

If I'm reading the VIN on that engine, it appears to be 16J. That would be a 1976 engine from the Janesville plant which usually made full size Chevys. I don't have a list of 1976 codes to verify that.

There appears to be only 1 use of CKT and as you point out thats for a 72 z28 engine. Have you looked in the oil pan drain hole to verify the windage tray?

CKT is a 255hp 350/4bbl auto trans used in 1972.

Would the windage tray be marked with any part code that would be legible or am I just looking for the presence of one?
And still the question remains is this engine if in fact a 72z worth going through the process of pulling it and putting something else in the 70?

I see what you are saying but why then the two conflicting pieces of info.

at the casting date on the back of the block and it’ll remove all doubt But it’s not likely to be an LT-1 as the J code plant only built full size cars- no camaros or corvettes

With all the other mods on the 70 having that engine or any other mild built 350 would have no real effect on the car's value I think. If it is an OE 72 Z engine and can be verified I'd sure yank it.
