1974 Heater core housing to defrost riser gap

I have a large gap between the heater core housing and the riser that goes up to the defrost. About 1.5 inch clear around. It was like this on dis assembly and I dont know if there is something missing or is this normal?

I used a universal foam seal that is used for installing A/c units in windows.

I believe that there was a seal in there 30 some years ago, but LONG dissintagrated.

Thank you spoon LT. We will go to homedepot or lowes tomorrow and find something. We already installed so we will find something that will work.

We ended up using aluminum tape all around the gap. It was a pain getting to the back of the riser area, but we cleaned real good and the tape felt like it would hold real well. We used multiple layers
